In addition to Italy, the mentioned Munich Convention has been signed by Austria, Germany, Greece, Luxembourg, Moldova (or Moldavia), Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, and Turkey.

1. What the Certificate of Legal Capacity to Marry under the Munich Convention of September 5, 1980, includes and its purpose

The Certificate of Legal Capacity to Marry is a standardized document that certifies the absence of legal impediments to marriage for a citizen who intends to marry abroad in one of the Countries where the Munich Convention is in force, namely: Austria, Germany, Greece, Luxembourg, Moldova (or Moldavia), Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, and Turkey.

It includes the following main information:

– Personal Details of the Certificate Holder: Name, surname, sex, citizenship, date and place of birth, and current residence. If the holder has been previously married, the certificate will record information about when the previous marriage ended, the reason why it ended, and the name of the former spouse.

– Personal Details of the Future Spouse: Name, surname, sex, citizenship, date and place of birth, and current residence. If the future spouse has been previously married, the certificate will record information about when the previous marriage ended, the reason why it ended, and the name of the former spouse.

If the competent authority is unable to complete a space or part of a space, that space or part of the space will be crossed out.

The certificate is issued in a multilingual format, conforming to the model set out in the Convention, with the fields already translated into the languages of the signatory countries, making it exempt from additional translation.

It can be issued to the holders or to an authorized representative.

It is valid for six months after its issuance.
