If the certificate needs to be legalized or apostilled, a step at the Prefecture is required, and we can handle it on your behalf, along with any necessary translation. In this case, the territorially competent Prefecture is the Prefecture of Ferrara.
The Free Status Certificate is an official registry document that certifies that the certificate holder is neither married nor in a civil partnership/registered partnership.
If the certificate holder is neither married nor in a civil partnership/registered partnership but previously was, the document will not include information about how the marriage or the partnership ended (for example, due to the death of spouse or the civil partner, or due to divorce or the dissolution of the civil union). If this type of information is required, it is advisable to request a Civil Status Certificate instead.
If the Free Status Certificate is specifically required for contracting marriage, and the marriage is to be celebrated in a Country where the Munich Convention of September 5, 1980, is in force, it may be replaced by the Certificate of Legal Capacity to Marry introduced by the same Convention, which is exempt from legalization and translation procedures.
It can be requested by anyone who knows the identifying details of the certificate holder.

The Free Status Certificate can usually be requested in any Municipality if, at the time of the request, the personal record (scheda anagrafica) of the certificate holder is registered in the ANPR (National Register of the Resident Population) and provided the certificate holder has not been cancelled from the register.
